I was absolutely shocked at the amount of noise pollution generated by the LIRR train station after moving into a new house on Essex St. There are times (especially at night) when it sounds like the locomotive is parked idling outside my bedroom window, and I live probably more than a mile away from the train station. Depending on the direction of the wind, there are times when the problem seems much worse. I completely understand that the train station needs to be there, and I have no problems with the trains coming & going... even sitting there idling for a wile between arrival & departure... blow the horn, that's fine. But, I really find the sound of these huge deisel locomotives sitting idling all night long, to be a major disturbance, filling the otherwise peacful environment with a deafening rumble that can literally be heard for miles.
