Recently it seems conditions at the Montauk Station have deteriorated again, with trains being left to high-idle for long periods both late at night and in the early morning hours (especially on the weekends). It seems that part of the problem is a disturbing new trend, where instead of parking at the station, the LIRR crew parking and HIGH-IDLING the trains NEXT TO FORT POND (on the old "turn-around track", which is no longer used since a deisel tank was punctured once while a train was being turned around). Not only does this parking the idling trains in this location make the noise worse for MOST PEOPLE in Montauk, but the train is parked in the middle of wetlands which are less than 100 yds from a fresh water pond WITH NO DRIP PADS while the fuel guage reads 2580 gallons!
: Can you tell me if the LIRR has any plans of upgrading the system, enabling them to turn off those engines. I heard that they have done so elsewhere when complaints pour in. Is it that we're a small, end of the line location that they ignore your requests? How about even heavily vegetating to muffle the sound? Have you consulted a sound engineer? Can you write back with any news, updates, etc? Thanks
