SUMMARY
PAST AND FUTURE INITIATIVES
The MAP Coalition is currently entering the final portion of Phase II in its campaign against noise and ecological pollution imposed on Montauk by the Long Island Railroad. Phase I centered on the research and publication of an 86 page report documenting the various forms of pollution directly related to LIRR practices, the number of Montauk citizens negatively affected and the overall impact on and to the village of Montauk. The report was distributed to various political representatives and the media. The first portion of Phase II centered on a second report which led to the discovery of additional and more serious pollution activities knowingly committed by the
LIRR. The findings have led to more active interest and participation of several key New York State political representatives. Additional copies of the report were distributed to the N.Y. State Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency. A mailing to local, state-wide and national media is planned for the near future. In addition to the above, the MAP coalition also regularlyconducts a monitoring program at the Montauk station. MAPC volunteers track and keep records of the number of trains at the station and the length of time the engines are allowed to idle. Phase III is scheduled to begin in June/04.
Phase III initiatives and goals.
1.Research and reportage of LIRR security practices concerning unattended long term idling locomotives.
2: Further investigation and discovery of directly related ecological damage.
3: Increased and more intensive effort, cooperation and interfacing with political representatives.
4: Concentrated efforts at media awareness and reportage.
5: Further efforts to meet with key LIRR and MTA personnel.
6 : Presentations familiarizing local Montauk organizations with past, present and future MAPC efforts.
7:: Additional LIRR monitoring efforts.
8: Increased interfacing and cooperation with other Long Island organizations who have similar concerns.
9: Increased distribution of MAPC reports and their findings.
