NOTE: The new law which went into effect in 2009 requiring EH Town Residents to purchase a town parking permit each year has been reversed. EH TOWN RESIDENTS NO LONGER HAVE TO PAY FOR TOWN PARKING PERMITS. You may continue using your old sticker (as long as the vehicle plate number is legible), or obtain a new permit sticker at the EH Town Clerks Annex in Montauk, or EH Town Hall.
The South side (ocean) beaches in Montauk are in excellent condition. The beaches near the village are in good shape with the widest sections consistently towards the West end of the village and along Old Montauk Highway (near the Sands, Ocean Resort Inn, Oceanside Beach Resort, Hartmann's Briney Breezes, and the Wave Crest).
Ditch Plains Beach is in decent shape with plenty of room between the dunes and the ocean. ("Ditch" is the favorite spot for surfers on most days.)
Gin Beach (on Block Island Sound) is in good condition. As usual, there are some clean sandy areas, but gravel and small rocks can accumulate just above the high tide line in some areas. You should consider bringing a beach chair. The waves are typically much smaller in Block Island Sound than on the ocean, and there is a roped off life guard protected swimming area, so this beach can be a good choice if you want to go swimming with smaller children or if the waves are too big on the ocean beaches.
NOTE: PERMIT REQUIRED - Town Beach Permits for Residents + Non-Residents available at E.H. Town Hall Annex. County Park (Gin Beach) permits available at the park office on East Lake Dr.
